Health Care, or Government Control

History reveals that “mobocracy” has seldom, if ever, delivered good results. Most citizens are aware of that and would consequently avoid being categorized with such an effort. The Democratic Party is also cognizant of the negative implications of a “mob” which has become one of their talking points when describing dissenting voters at town hall meetings. Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary defines a mob as “the lower classes of a community; a large or disorderly crowd bent on riotous or destructive action.” Nancy Pelosi has gone so far as to say that the objectors of the health care bill are Astroturf which is a synthetic product. In the plainest words possible, the Democrats are insulting millions of Americans who disagree with them by suggesting they are pond scum which isn’t even real. Republicans, Democrats, independents, and hard rock conservatives all have problems with the proposed health care bill and are voicing their disapproval when given the opportunity. The directive from party headquarters is now to limit those occasions.

I called the office of our Congressman John T. Salazar to ask if any town hall meetings were scheduled in his district. The individual I spoke with indicated that she didn’t know of any but referred me to the representative’s press secretary with an e-mail address. I immediately fired off a message to him introducing myself followed by an inquiry about the meetings. I informed him that I wrote a column for several newspapers, and my readers would be interested in knowing about the possibility of participating in the traditional cornerstone of democracy. The request was concluded with a desire to know what would be the reasoning for no scheduled meetings…..no answer! My email was cordial and respectful….no answer!

I will now write what I didn’t then….these thin-skinned, sissy britches politicians who are unwilling to face the public which pays their salaries and health care ought to be voted out. At this writing there have been no reports of any “mobs” overturning cars, burning effigies, promoting violence or threatening the elected officials. There have been some very unhappy and concerned citizens because they have done what many in Congress have not---they have actually read the bill! If more of the American public knew what was in this proposed legislation, there would be protests across the country. I have not read all 1018 pages in detail, but what I have perused sent up some very red flags. A few of the major issues need to be addressed:

1. Health care will be rationed. The government will determine how much will be allocated to any individual based upon age and other factors; an unknown bureaucrat will decide how valuable grandma is and how much should be spent on her. See page 29, lines 4-16 and page 85, line 7. Even cancer treatment will be rationed; see page 272, sec. 1145.

2. A government committee will decide what treatment and benefits are available for any particular illness; your doctor will no longer be the accepted authority concerning your care. See page 30, sec. 123 and page 42.

3. The government will create a Health Care Exchange to bring private health care plans under government control…page 72, lines 8-14.

4. The government will mandate all benefit packages for private health care plans in the exchange. See page 84, sec. 203.

5. No company can sue the government on price fixing--- no judicial review against government monopoly. In the simplest of terms the government can force private companies to provide elaborate benefits which will drive their costs up and make them non-competitive with a taxpayer subsidized government policy, and there will be no legal recourse for the private sector. See page 124, lines 24-25.

6. Any nonresident alien (legal or illegal) is exempt from individual taxes but will be covered by the government plan. Guess who pays? Page 170, lines 1-3

7. The government will decide what level of treatment you will have at the end of life. Page 430, lines 11-15

These are but a very few of many great concerns. Everyone knows the system needs some work, but this overhaul is about nothing but complete control. There are some insurance companies which are less than scrupulous; some doctors are predatory and take advantage of insurance and Medicare, and some hospitals charge $20 for an aspirin. I have personally witness all of these shenanigans, but it’s difficult for me to believe that a government that has been known to pay $200 for a toilet seat could really do better. In a free market system the consumer is the best watchdog. If the government wants to get into the health care business, let it, but make it compete on a level playing field, and everyone will benefit.

We are constantly being told that there is an incredible urgency associated with this effort; without its implementation, the world will collapse. The real problem with delay, investigation, and debate is a growing awareness of the ingredients in the frying pan. The big rush is intended for the singular purpose of deception.

The New Testament records several occasions when the religious elite plotted against Jesus but came to realize their plan was foiled because “they feared the people.” The commoners had enough sense to investigate and accept the truth. These “peasants” were a roadblock to the beltway crowd which held the hicks in perfect disdain. The final solution for the elimination of the Truth (John 14:6) was chicanery. Hmmmm…..!
