"Liberal Insanity"

The so-called economic stimulus package that is presently under Congressional consideration is the primary topic of media conversation.  My role as a Biblical commentator is to examine relevant issues or current events and interpret them under the light of Scripture.  In the illumination of the presently known facts of this newest bailout only one verse came to mind:  “Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed….” (Matthew 17:15)  If I had the liberty to change Holy Writ, I would modify the singular to the plural and point the arrow directly at Washington, D.C.

This piece of legislation spans more than 600 pages of text that was released to the Senate this week.  I have read numbers from 825 to 888 billion dollars.  Some examples of proposed expenditures are in order:

  • $100 million for researching sexually transmitted diseases
  • $200 million for bike and pedestrian trails and off-road vehicle routes
  • $200 million to force the military to buy environmentally friendly electric cars
  • $34 million to renovate the Department of Commerce headquarters
  • $75 million for a program to end smoking which, if successful, will bankrupt the children’s health program Democrats are about to pass.

These are just a few of the ridiculous offerings written into this bill.  In all, the money is going to 150 different federal programs –from Amtrak to the TSA—and it’s not evident that one new job will be created.

Of the $825 billion in the bill that is being sold as an infrastructure investment, only $30 billion will actually go to build highways, about $40 billion for upgrades to our telecommunications and electricity infrastructure, and about $20 billion in business tax cuts.  These are the only three components of the bill that might arguably stimulate the economy and create jobs, if only temporarily.  Altogether, only 11 percent of the so-called American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will have anything to do with either recovery or reinvestment.

Nearly two weeks ago I emailed Sen. Udall’s office with the simple question: “Do you object to any of the propositions in this proposed legislation?”  I identified myself as a weekly columnist and suggested our readers would be interested in his response; so far, no answer.  I can only assume that our good senator in supportive of this entire package of insanity but doesn’t want you to know it.  The obvious question that needs to be answered is who then does benefit from this legislation?  According to Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), “Alternative energy companies, public employee unions, teachers unions, university faculties and administrators, welfare recipients, ACORN-style community organizers, politicians who spend the money, federal bureaucrats who allocate it, and the lawyers and lobbyists who will influence every dime behind the scenes.  In other words, this bill is a massive transfer of wealth not from the rich to the poor, but from the middle-class families and small businesses to favored Democratic constituencies below and above them on the socio-economic ladder.”

The money for the “stimulus” must come from somewhere, and if recent history is any indicator much of it will be borrowed from foreign entities and governments.  We may find ourselves entering into indentured servitude in the most covert of ways—economically.  The Biblical summation is “the borrower is servant to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7)

The suggestion of many analysts is that this is a huge step toward European styled socialism.  Some very credible Bible scholars believe that America is characterized by the prophet Daniel as a Roman leopard, and its destiny is amalgamation back into its original European roots.  The primary form of leverage for this eventual confederation is monetary control leading to total government domination.  (Revelation 13:17,18)  The Bible is increasingly difficult to ignore when so many of its prophesies are being fulfilled at the speed of a runaway freight train.

Our lunatic narrative continues with the boy’s father bringing his son to Jesus with this conclusion:  “And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.”  A great affirmation of the reality of the devil is lunatic thinking.  Luna, Latin for moon, or to expand it –moonstruck, loony or loony tunes, and only a loony tune would totally ignore history.

John F. Kennedy’s 1964 tax reductions led to 9 million new private sector jobs in five years.  Ronald Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts led to 7 million in the same time frame.  The 2001 and 2003 tax cuts have led to the creation of 4 million and 6 million jobs respectively.  Similar stories can be told of Great Britain rescued by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980’s, and Israel’s economic reforms under Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  But then every history revisionist I ever heard of was a political liberal --- or was it the devil at work in the halls of Congress?
