The Word's Eye View is a newspaper column written by
"Political Expediency or the Bible?" The first week of President Obama’s administration featured an executive order fulfilling a campaign pledge to close the Guantanamo detention center within a year. This decision was heralded as an efficacious salve to heal the wounded conscience of a prodigal nation. This stroke of the presidential pen was accompanied by much fanfare with the strong suggestion that America has now ascended to a higher moral ground. The recognition of terrorist rights is, after all, sterling evidence of our historical commitment to human rights; or is it? On the heels of this ill conceived resolution another executive signature authorized our government to spend millions of tax payers’ dollars to fund abortions internationally. According to the Associated Press this was done “quietly by issuing a memorandum late Friday afternoon without coverage of the media.” The trumpeters of righteousness were conspicuously absent when this decree was released. If it was virtuous and just, shouldn’t it be shouted from the housetops of NBC ? Certainly the skids of a decision of these epic proportions must be greased with every moral word in an English Thesaurus. It seems the left would prefer to descend to the murky euphemisms of choice, a woman’s rights, or reproductive responsibility. Is it possible that genuine morality demands more consideration for those who would slay the innocent than for the innocent themselves. Liberal rational has little use for the Bible, but they do realize that the American public isn’t quite ready to discard it so it is still utilized when new presidents put their hand on it and swear in God’s name that they will uphold the Constitution. The Left will even go so far as to quote the scriptures when it appears to benefit their agenda. Protestors of capitol punishment frequently carry placards embossed with the sixth commandment “Thou shalt not kill.” Of course, there isn’t one socialist in a thousand that knows that the very next chapter (Exodus 21:12) states. “He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.” “Judge not, that ye be not judged” is an all purpose verse that often serves as an excellent hammer. The qualifier, “But he that is spiritual judgeth all things…” (I Corinthians 2:15) is always relegated to the religious dumpster. I have never heard the pro-choice crowd use sacred verbiage to authenticate their position so in the spirit of bi-partisanship and unity I thought it benevolent to help them out and list a few possibilities: 1. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul.” Clearly Adam was not a living soul until he breathed which is something a fetus does not do. Naturally, the fact that the first man never was in a womb must be disregarded and the message God delivered to the prophet Jeremiah must be ignored: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee…” The liberals have never cared much for literary accuracy or theological correctness so the creation of Adam should be at the top of their verification list. 2. Jesus dedicated Matthew 24 preparing Israel for a future Holocaust initiated by the antichrist. In the midst of this dialogue He said, “And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!” Convoluted logic would conclude it’s better to abort a child that to have one in the light of these circumstances. This thinking would fly in the fact of “Take heed that ye dispise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” But really, wasn’t the Bible made available for a pick and choose smorgasbord? 3. “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” (I Corinthians 6:12) This verse is surely the mother lode of free passes. It seems to extend total liberty to the “do as I please” flock. The next eight verses present a whole boat load of qualifiers that would need to be abolished, but why not? Couldn’t we sacrifice a little truth for the sake of bringing the nation together? One of my old professors used to remind us that “a text without a context is a pretext;” however, this grand principle has long since been abdicated from by the majority. Therefore, I suggest that the White House re-visit the late night memorandum and decorate it with some Bible. It makes a thing look more acceptable to the ignorant masses. Never mind that a context is necessary, or that Judgment Day is coming. (Revelation 19:11-15) Take your chances for political expediency’s sake.
