The Word's Eye View is a newspaper column written by Different time frames in history are attached to a spirit which matched that age. For example, America has experienced in its past a spirit of exploration, pioneering, industrialism, entrepreneurialism, etc. These so-called spirits are simply a manifestation of the prevailing attitude of that day. The Bible, without apology to any one, prophesies a time and spirit of delusion during which people will actually embrace a lie because they have no love for the truth. (See II Thessalonians 2) As we approach election day it is becoming increasingly clear that multitudes are twinkle-dusted with fairy tales without substance. We have seen the banner of universal health care flagged from a million sign posts accompanied by no rational plan for payment of the same. We have been told that 95% of us will receive a tax break…I’m having trouble connecting the dots. The Obama campaign acknowledges that their tax plan would increase taxes for at least 184,000 small businesses in America to say nothing of what it would do to those large, evil, wicked, greedy corporations. Anyone with the sense of a southbound goose knows those tax increases will be passed on to the consumer; consequently your tax break will be called a price increase, but those interested in believing a lie will ignore the obvious. If we are headed for a real train wreck, isn’t God obligated to intervene and overrule national insanity? The truth of the matter is, God doesn’t rig elections; He has many names…the Good Shepherd, the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, the Great Physician, etc., but to the best of my knowledge, He has never called Himself “Acorn.” What God does do, is survey the public attitude and responds proportionally. If a sufficient number of citizens insist on driving on the wrong side of the road, God absolves Himself from responsibility and allows us to practice a “true democracy.” After the exodus Israel entered into a 450 year period known as the Judges. Politically speaking, this is known as a theocracy; God was the president, and the law was administered by judges appointed by Him. The Jews grew weary of this conditional covenant because blessings, prosperity and protection were dependent solely upon obedience and good behavior. The history of the Judges is the roller coaster that the constituents built for themselves. In an effort to circumvent the God-given system, Israel observed their neighbor nations and desired to emulate them. Samuel (the last of the Judges) was the recipient of their wrath and insults as they demanded a king to govern their affairs. Their logic was obvious --- “If we can de-throne God and replace Him with one of us, our level of moral responsibility will decrease in proportion.” Their wish was granted, and a short honeymoon followed; however, King Saul and his administration came to a tragic conclusion, dragging the nation with them. The moral of the story: an increasing number of Americans have been prompted to look at other countries which are ahead of us on the path of socialism. Some are so anxious to be on the gravy train that the large number of Canadians coming to the United States for medical treatment makes no mental impact upon them. Their socialized system informs its citizens that common procedures may involve a two year waiting list. Certainly, the reasoning goes, our huge bureaucracy can do better. If only we had a king, he would take care of us…or would he? In the final analysis, Christians still possess the ability to take God off the spectator sidelines. The recipe is found in II Chronicles 7:14---“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” There are many examples in history where a majority was not mandated; a simple, sincere minority got the job done. Are we in the age of delusion or just tinkering around the edges? Time will tell!
