CHAPTER FIVE
5:1,2 A mountain (Mt. Zion) is for a king who "sets."
5:3 Poor in spirit, as in broken or contrite - (Ps. 34:18, 66:2). 5:4 A lot of people mourn who are never comforted - (Matt 13:42; Jn. 16:20; Isa. 57:15-18). 5:5 Quote from (Ps. 37:11) with reference to (Zeph. 2;3) (1376). 5:6 (Prov. 21:21) is a good inspirational passage for this, again a promise future reward for doing right now. This was literally fulfilled in (Acts. 4:31). 5:7 General spiritual truth is found in (Rom. 12:8; 19-21; Ps. 18:25,47; Jas. 2:12,13). To assume general mercy at last judgment is in error. 5:8 2nd Advent doctrine based on (Ps. 24:3,4,6). Everyone will see God at one time or another - (Rev. 20, Rom. 2:16, 3:19). A born-again Christian has a pure soul and heart, (1 Pet. 1:22,23). 5:9 Notice Jesus was not a peacemaker, (Lk. 12:51-53; Jn. 7:43; 10:19). But He gives peace to those who believe, (Jn. 14:27). 5:10,11 Men are not saying evil against the liberals because of Jesus sake. (Rom. 10:1-9) is a good discussion of righteousness. 5:12 "Rejoice" - (Rom. 12:12; 1 Pet. 3:14-18). "Prophets" - (Lk. 6:26) false prophets. 5:14 Light of the world also Christian - (Phil. 2:15; 1 Thess. 5;5). Can be a doctrinal application if it can be found in Paul's Epistles. As Christians we reflect the "light of the world" (Christ Jn. 9:5).
5:15 Two great obstacles to witnessing (Mk. 4:21) - candle under bushel or bed) commercialism or laziness. 5:16 Notice the works don't shine, just the light. (Vs. 16) obviously addressed to believing Jews, consequently "Your Father." Father relationship to Israel - (Ex. 4:22,23). 5:17,18 [1]. If Christ did not come to destroy the law or the prophets, then everything that follows in the rest of the Sermon is not an abridgment of the law but an embellishment of it.
5:19 The 17th Day Adventist build their plan of salvation on (vs. 18-20) and put their people back under Old Testament bondage, but we are obligated to make some sense out of this. [1]. (Rom. 3:31) makes it clear has not been destroyed.
5:20 The righteousness of the Pharisees was considerable as in reference to the Ten Commandments - for more than most of today's Pharisees - its obvious Jesus is beginning a discussion about another kind of righteousness which is going to have to come from a different source. 5:21 The judgment is discussed in (Num. 35:24; Deut. 19:18); - he also is in danger of being executed - (Num. 35:16-31; Deut. 19:15-20). 5:22 Liberals, who love the Sermon on the Mount have some problems with this verse: [1]. When were you tempted to call Raca?
Jesus and Paul both disobeyed - (Lk. 25:25; 1 Cor. 15:36);. Christians are told to be angry at times. (Eph. 4:26) 5:23,24 If passage applies to Christians, where is altar (not in a building - Heb. 13:10). It shows up in (Rev. 11:1-3) (Trib) and (Eze. 44-48) (Mill).
5:25,26 There are two adversaries in the Bible: [1]. The Devil (1 Pet. 5:8)
5:27,28 with her - if she fails to dress modestly or act properly (1 Tim. 2:9) the woman participates in the sin - eyes (2 Pet. 2:14) watch what you put before your eyes. Why did the man look - he might be solely responsible, but she may share in the blame, (Prov. 6:25; Eze. 23:40). 5:29,30 Jesus is not embarrassed to mention hell (vs. 22). He quotes (Isa. 66:24) more than any other verse in the Old Testament. It might be that hell is not the grave, for why then would you cut something off to prevent you from going somewhere that all are going to. 5:31,32 See (Matt 19:3-12; Jer. 3:8) every cause (vs. 3) comes from (Deut. 24:1,2). [1]. Jesus narrows the field to fornication's which is defined as a body activity - (1 Cor. 6:13; 16-18). 5:33 To "forswear" is to swear falsely or to perjure oneself. (Deut. 6:13). 5:34,35 "Swear not at all" is qualified in (Matt. 26:63), so the JW's miss it again. Did you ever wonder why people say "Heavenly days," "My heavens," "My stars," "Thank Heavens." etc.
5:36,37 Further oaths include, "By my head," "As sure as I live," "As sure as your breath." Man's mouth is a sure indicator of his depravity, Gosh, Goodness, Golly, Geminny, Gee Whiz, Gee Whilikers, My Goodness, My Gracious, Gracious me. Your yes should mean yes, and no should mean no, so an oath is not necessary to supplement the language. 5:35,38 The quote from (Deut. 19:21), but the liberals forget the setting is a court of law (vs. 18). The New Testament Christians approach is (Rom. 12:17-21). Jesus did not always recommend passivity - (Lk. 22:36). 5:40-42 The so-called strict adherents of the "Sermon on the Mount" initiate more law suits over church property, leaving conventions, etc. The borrowing, means without interest, (Deut. 23:19; Ex. 22:25). 5:43 This verse is called a Rabbinical addition, for this is not exactly what God said, even though it would be easy to assume that hat can include a correct attitude - (Deut. 7:1-3, 20). However, this verse is never pointed out by Bible critics in the light of (Gen. 15:16), or what that entire culture was guilty of. The correct hatred of the Old Testament is against the enemies of God, not an individual's enemies. (Ps. 139:21-24). 5:44,45 Jesus is teaching nothing new - (Job 31:28-30; Prov. 25:21,22). Love is the only new note injected, for that goes beyond tolerating - it exceeds (Rom. 12:20). To this point the only mention of God being Father to anyone is Israel - (Ex. 4:22,23; Isa. 46:3).
