The
First Commandment
A SERMON
OUTLINE By
Dr. James Modlish
(Mark 12:28-34)
Intro:
The
last of the "Big Four" shows up. Jesus has shut the
Herodians up on the Tribute Question. The Sadducees on
the Resurrection Question, and the Pharisees on the
Baptism Question. This scribe, according to Matthew is a
lawyer and seems to have a double motive. He is not only
"sicked on" Jesus, but has some semblance of honesty for
we read "having heard
and perceiving that he has
answered them well."
This man,
with an ear for legal logic, is not altogether a
hypocrite. Secretly he admires any man who can stand
trial and answer the Jesus like Jesus has been
doing.
But still
Matthew adds he was "tempting him" which has a double
motive - he wants to test his mettle.
I. The Order
of Commandments
Human
propensity is to reverse the order!
Example:
[1].
I've never murdered anyone rather than I've
never cursed God's name.
[2]. I try to treat everyone fairly rather
than I've always obeyed God's word.
We are
more interested in the second
commandment:
A.
Because we are also a neighbor.
B.
Those who we love are neighbors of
someone.
C.
Treating neighbors right help the neighborhood which
helps us.
-
It is very difficult to see where selfishness ends and
obedience begins in this one.
