Chapter Twenty Eight
(28:1-31)

Vs. 1

Melita = Malta

Vs. 3-9

(Mk. 16:16-18) Paul exhibits the signs of an apostle with a registered physician. Luke on board (Acts 27:1,2).

Vs. 4

(Rom. 2:14)

Vs. 6

"They changed their minds, and said he was a god." (Acts 14:13,19)

Vs. 8

"Bloody flux" - dysentery

Paul exercises the Apostolic gifts on Publius' father. This opens the door for Paul to preach the gospel: (Rom. 15:18, 19).

Vs. 11-16

The group winters there at Malta and when the weather begins to change, they board an Alexandrian ship whose sign (name, emblem) was Castor and Pollux, the Gemini Twins.

Vs. 13

"Fetched a compass'' - sail a circular pattern. (Josh. 6:3,4,7,13,14)

Vs. 15

"Appii forum" refers to a town on the Appian Way about 52 miles from Rome.

Vs. 17-31

Paul wastes no time in Rome and immediately calls a meeting of the Jews. He begins to preach using his testimony as a starting point.

"For the hope of Israel I am bound" (Acts 26:6; Isa. 26:17-19; Eze. 37, 24:15, 23:6)

(Isa. 6:9,10) is quoted four times in the New Testament, (Rom. 11:8; Jn. 12:40; Matt. 13:14)

Read (Rom. 11):

Here we find the final rejection by Israel of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Jews rejected Christ in Jerusalem (Acts 7).

The Jews blaspheme the name of Christ in Asia Minor (Acts 13:45,46).

The Jews reject the Word on the European mainland (Acts 18:6).

The Jews reject Jesus in the Gentile capitol of the world (Acts 28:28). God is through with Israel. Christ sits down at the right hand of the Father again (Heb. 1:3).

Signs cease to Israel with God's dealing. (Rom. 10:12) There is no difference between Jew and Greek.

The Book is left on a positive note:

Paul is doing what we should be doing as the book ends, "Preaching the Kingdom of God...teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ..." In fact, the Book of Acts really doesn't end.

So here, in a Roman prison,' the historical chronology drops Paul. He writes Philippians, Colossians, Ephesians, and Philemon from this prison, and the next time he returns to it after a brief respite, he' completes Titus and II Timothy. In the interim, it is possible that Paul made the trip to Spain (Rom. 15:24) and barring unusual opposition, he might have made a trip to England, although the distance would require a voyage of two to three months one way.

Since Christ has given to us eternal life, Luke ends the narrative with Paul alive...preaching and teaching.
