Chapter Eleven
(11:1-29)

Vs. 1-18

As Peter returns to Jerusalem he receives opposition from some of the brethren. They are upset that Peter had fellowshipped with Gentile, Peter then relates the whole story of (Acts 10).

Vs. 15

Shows us that the incident of (Acts 10:43-48) and the reception of the Holy Ghost was an-exact duplicate of Pentecost in (Acts 2). The tongues spoken were that of the same nature as in Chapter (2).

Vs. 16

The event triggered in Peter's mind a complete understanding of baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Vs. 17

They received "the gift" exactly as was received by the apostles in Chapter (2).

Vs. 18

Those at Jerusalem then rejoiced at the revelation that has been received.

The Hyper-Calvinists have used (vs. 18) to teach that unless God "grants repentance" to a man he cannot repent satisfactorily enough for God. Since the sinner is dead (Eph. 2:14) he cannot repent even though he is commanded to (Matt. 11:21 and Acts 20:21). Thus God must repent in a man to bring forth "godly sorrow."

The text is plainly talking about God allowing the Gentiles a chance to get in on the gospel privileges and promises exactly as they are found in Romans 11:1-28. The statement is talking about National privileges, not God turning a sinner to himself against the sinner's will.

Vs. 19-26

The student of Biblical Criticism and Manuscript Evidence should take note of the localities mentioned. These would indicate where the New Testament was first circulated in the language of the people. Antioch is predominant, (vs. 19,20,22,26,27). This is the home base of Paul's missionary activities to Jews ONLY. Many turn to the Lord (Rom. 17-16).

The word is spreading quickly. News returns to Jerusalem of the great revivals in Syria and Barnabas is sent to witness the events. Barnabas exhorts the brethren, goes to Tarsus to get Paul and then brings Paul to Antioch where they stay a whole year teaching the converts.

Here at Antioch the disciples are first called Christians. (Acts 26:28, 1 Pet. 4:16, Ja. 2:7)

Vs. 27-30

The prophets move from Jerusalem to Antioch. Jerusalem is all washed up.

Vs. 28

Agabus - (Acts 21:10,11) Things are very difficult in Jerusalem for the church there. A collection is taken to send relief to them. (Rom. 15:25-27; 2 Cor. 9:1,2)

Vs. 29

"According to his ability" (2 Cor. 9:6-9)
